This week on Myopia: Defend Your Childhood, we watch a cautionary tale about toxic masculinity that made us all hate IKEA. We watched Fight Club, who knew that Helena Bonham Carter could act without Tim Burton?

Boondock Saints

Thursday Sep 06, 2018
Welcome to the next month in our season 5 line-up, Cool In College. Curated by Daniel, these movies were the posters on every wall sold in the quads from under a cheap canopy. These were the movies you thought were profound when you were in your late teens and early twenties, do they hold up or are they cheap messages and indie film money from the 90's. We will find out together!
Our first pick is the box office poison that was Boondock Saints. According to Box Office Mojo, the widest release it had was five theaters and made $30,471 on a $6,000,000 investment. The cult status came later of this neo-libertarian crime? revenge? movie! Prepare for homophobia!

Little Rascals

Thursday Aug 30, 2018
Has there ever been a joke that people around you like, but you just don't find funny? Maybe it has been stripped down from a better joke, or told so many times that it is no longer funny. With that image in your head, we watch the Little Rascals, from the director of Wayne's World. You heard me.
This is the last precocious kid movie of the month and boy is it as doozy with a surprise cameo you won't expect; I was gobsmacked. As it stands, though, thanks for sharing the previous episodes and helping start the season right. This is the last week to suggest your precocious kids movie and we will see if your choice is an episode in the spring! Second, please continue to rate and review us! I will be riffing the next movie, Matthew Broderick’s WarGames on September 7th, with Larry and Candace.

My Science Project

Thursday Aug 16, 2018
As precoucious kid month rolls on, we watch a Matthew classic! While this was not a movie I had not seen before, it lurks on in the pantheon of weird 80s movies. It has all the classic elements, nerd girl who is actually gorgeous but hideous because she has glasses, jocks and nerds, washed out hippies, and Eisenhower ordering the destruction of alien technology. Also, boring pacing! Fun!

Casper

Welcome to Season 5 of Myopia: Defend Your Childhood! We continue the precociousness with a blast from the cartoon past, which is the only reason I can imagine that Father Guido Sarducci, Dan Ackroyd, Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield, and Mel Gibson did cameos. Further, this helps cement Christina Ricci in the 1990s, why Brad Garrett is CGI animated in all of Pixar's movies, and is between starring in While You Were Sleeping and Independence Day for Bill Pullman. We watched the CGI-tastic Casper from 1995.

Matilda

Thursday Aug 02, 2018
Welcome to Season 5 of Myopia: Defend Your Childhood! We return strong and refreshed with constantly mentioned ‘stay-tuned’ episode, the Danny DeVito directed Roald Dahl classic, Matilda! What can you expect in the new season? So much!
First, once a month, we will have a bonus episode! (We even released one last month, if you did not tune in). Second, new theme song! Third, rather than seemingly random movies, we will pick a theme and a group of regulars will select their movie choices. This month, I selected the category ‘precocious kid movies.’ You know the ones, Nickelodeon and Disney pumped them out in the 1990s. The adults are always wrong, the kids are always right. Maybe Emilio Estevez betrays the team by trying to pick up a woman twice his height or the parents all turn out to be frauds. Finally, we know we will not get to all the selections you want, so check out the Facebook Group where we will have a survey to tell us the movies you wished we covered this month. They may come back during an upcoming listener request month!
Next, thanks to all of you who have been supporting me in the past year as I have done Cineprov! I believe I have performed six times and it is always nice to see fans. I will continue to perform and you should continue to see me! While I am not on the August show (Cineprov is riffing Troll 2 August 2nd (the day this is released), with Riffers Larry, Candace, and Christine), I will be there and so should you! I will be riffing the next movie War Games on September 7th, however (with Larry and Evan).
Finally, I want to thank my production team Candice, Daniel, Matthew, and Thomas, all the panelists, and all my listeners. I promise this season will only improve on the last!
This week on Myopia: Defend Your Childhood, I think we learned that child abuse gives you magic powers, just like Harry Potter. We saw Matilda, is this the only time Danny DeVito can say “I’m big, you’re little” to anyone?
